The History of Central Highlands Coffee
The History of Central Highlands Coffee: Nearly a Century Rooted in Ea Pôk
When speaking of Vietnamese coffee, one cannot overlook the Central Highlands - the nation’s coffee capital, where red basalt soil, a distinct highland climate, and a deep-rooted indigenous spirit converge.
In Vietnam’s near century-long coffee journey, the land of Ea Pôk (Cư M’gar, Đắk Lắk) has become a living symbol of endurance, authenticity, and sustainable growth from bean to human story.
1936 – The First Green Shoots and a Historic Milestone
In 1936, the first coffee trees were planted in Ea Pôk, marking a defining moment in the history of Vietnamese coffee.
Since then, Ea Pôk has become more than a cultivation area it has become a cradle of heritage, nurturing some of the world’s finest Robusta beans and preserving the primal character of its origin.
Ea Pôk has stood as the birthplace of native coffee - a place where earth, sky, and people are inextricably bound.
1976 – The Formation of Ea Pôk Plantation and a New Era of Growth
Following national reunification, the Ea Pôk Coffee Plantation was officially established in 1976, marking the beginning of a systematic, scientific approach to coffee farming.
Local Ê Đê villagers and agricultural technicians worked side by side to develop a specialized cultivation zone investing heart and hope in making coffee the region’s economic backbone.
Between 1984 and 1986, the plantation received major investments in varietals, farming methods, and infrastructure.
By 1986, Ea Pôk had achieved a milestone: over 3,000 tons of fresh cherries, yielding 720 tons of green coffee.
The People – Soul of the Coffee Land
The story of Ea Pôk would be incomplete without its people - generations of farmers, workers, and Ê Đê artisans who have devoted their lives to the bean.
They not only cultivated the land, but passed down a love for coffee, the soil, and the rich culture of the Highlands.
It was here that the idea of a coffee ecosystem began to take root where coffee is not just a crop, but a living cultural legacy.
From Plantation to Brand – Ea Pôk Today
Nearly a century later, Ea Pôk has grown into a fully integrated coffee ecosystem, managing the entire value chain: from seed and cultivation to processing, roasting, packaging, and serving in immersive coffee spaces.
Ea Pôk’s mission goes beyond producing high-quality coffee, it is about preserving the soul of the Central Highlands through every cup, every story shared, and every hands-on experience in roasting, brewing, and cultural performance.
Ea Pôk Coffee – The Taste of Time and Memory
From a humble coffee farm in 1936 to Vietnam’s leading native coffee ecosystem today, Ea Pôk stands as a testament to resilience, creativity, and preservation.
It is a living chapter in the story of Vietnamese coffee where the Central Highlands don’t just grow coffee,
they live it.
